2021.10.20 12:26 Ianteepeedood Dilemma. As a software/web dev, do you suggest government or private as the first internship?
I just interviewed for three private medium/small-sized companies for software/web position and will know if I got an offer tomorrow. However, I just received two more interview opportunities and one of them is with the government. I was told that I was a strong candidate for the government position.
I can only reject one offer and must accept the next one I get since it's through co-op which means I can choose to drop out of the pool of applicants before getting an offer for the 3 interviews I did already or I can continue applying to the government job or I can choose to go for the offer if I get one.
I have one day to decide before getting an offer tomorrow. Do you suggest I drop out of the pool for the three jobs for the chance at working for the government as a web/software dev?

2021.10.20 12:26 TeacherAmigo Don’t be afraid of a pay cut.
You really are making an investment in yourself. A majority of people that I have spoken to initially had to take about a 10-15% pay cut. We can all appreciate that this is not ideal or what we want to hear. It is important to realize that this is only a short-term move. In all likelihood, you will make that loss back and probably exceed your income potential by leaving education.
Look at it like this. As a civil servant, your pay scale is set to go up only so much each year and there are times where it will not go up at all. When you enter the business world there are no set limits to how much you can potentially make. Furthermore, companies can also offer you other forms of compensation, such as free healthcare, ongoing education, tuition reimbursement, and bonuses to name a few.

2021.10.20 12:26 TomAto314 Midnight Mass (the netflix show, not like an actual church thing)
I was pretty excited for this one since it's made by the people who did the Haunting of Hill House which I really liked and I heard good things from the sneak peeks and it was just ok.
A small northern fishing island town and strange things start happening when a new preacher comes to town. There's a lot of catholic religion talk, but not really in a bad or good way but the mystery and horror just really weren't that great.
If you're bored feel free to check it out, but I can't imaging anyone is lacking for shows to watch.

2021.10.20 12:26 B33rNut How to refinish old fireplace?
45 year old natural stone fireplace, blocks are 6 inches thick from what I can see. There is mortar missing, cracks, mineral deposits leeching from water infiltration, and just generally kind of ugly. I’d rather not have to rip all of this stone out, so I’m looking for other options. I’m thinking step 1 is making sure everything is water tight externally as well as internally. Step 2, clean the existing stone, removing grime and mineral deposits. Step 3 is where I am unsure… use some type of mortar over the existing stone to make a generally smooth surface? Or, create a 2x4 frame around it and cement board over that? Maybe there are better options?
Then do stacked stone or something more modern once there is a viable surface…

2021.10.20 12:26 Remarkable-Mobile779 A call to newer atheists: become a child again
Ok sorry for the really obscure title there folks, I promise it has some real meaning.
It seems to me there are a lot of relatively new or young atheists in this sub. I find that a lot of them have a scornful, even bitter attitude towards the religious. Often this is a rational response to the harm caused by religion, but often it is an emotive reaction to any aspect of religion no matter how innocuous.
Is there any reason to soften our attitudes to the religious?
In "Thus Spake Zarathustra", Nietzsche says that when we leave religion we go through three spiritual phases.
The first, when we are religious is like a camel. We are beasts bearing the burden of religious belief, yet starving in the desert of truth.
The second, when we first leave religion is like a lion. We fiercely hunt down truth and seek to overpower religious restrictions.
The third, when we are secure in our unbelief is like a child. We become open again to new ideas, and have the possibility of growing in fresh new directions.
It's not so much a rational argument as a painting of how we might live in the world without the burden of religious belief or its immediate after effects.
